How Africa Can Better Embrace Human-Centred Leadership for Lasting Transformation

Africa is often described with various labels.

Many view it as a desert, a land plagued by corruption, a continent with a vast population of poor people, divided by cultural and religious differences, or a place where leaders are shortsighted and prioritize their own gain over the collective good.

Contrary to these stereotypes, Africa has experienced significant growth over the past two decades. From better policies to new diplomatic relationships and improved governance structures, many countries are showing signs of resilience and change. However, this progress has been slow and inconsistent.

A fact that has been established is that the root of Africa’s problem is not the absence of resources, talent, or opportunity, but the lack of visionary leaders. A visionary leader is a forward thinker, one who develops a compelling and innovative long-term vision and rallies people toward it. Crucially, a visionary leader understands that people are the lifeblood of any vision, because no vision succeeds without people to carry it forward.

Beyond strategy, great goals, and ambition, every visionary leader must recognise that leadership is about people; their mindset, growth, and collective empowerment. For Africa to rise into its full potential, visionary leadership must be deeply human-centred, as this would greatly impact leaders’ approach towards building and creating a sustainable environment for all.

“Success may be measured by things (prosperity, property, positions, possessions), but GREATNESS (Leadership) can only be measured by PEOPLE.”
― Fela Durotoye

What is Human-Centred Leadership?

Human-centered leadership is a style of leadership that prioritises people, their well-being, growth, and potential, while guiding them toward the larger vision. It focuses on purpose, empathy, and collaboration, ensuring that success is measured not just by results but by how people are empowered and transformed in the process.

Across Africa’s challenges, one thread runs consistently: the absence of leaders who prioritise people.

  • Corruption thrives where leaders place personal enrichment above public good.
  • Poverty persists when economies are designed to extract value from people, not invest in their development.
  • Weak institutions collapse when leaders fail to build succession systems or nurture younger leaders.
  • Brain drain continues when environments do not enable talent to flourish at home.
  • Instability spreads when leaders ignore the voices of the governed and choose control over collaboration.

A review by Harvard Business Impact shows that organisations and institutions that adopt human-centred approaches achieve significantly higher levels of performance, engagement, and innovation, all while experiencing lower levels of fatigue and burnout (1). The same principles apply to nations and communities: when leaders focus on people, their growth, dignity, and empowerment, societies flourish.

At IMMERSE, we see how key human-centered leadership is in these times, and this marks the vision behind the Visionary Leadership Conference (VLC) 2025.

Since 2023, VLC has convened over 900 leaders across multiple countries, with a strong mission to empower emerging and established leaders across systems and spheres of society to tackle Africa’s pressing challenges through visionary leadership.

This year marks the third edition of VLC, with the theme – Human-Centred Leadership: Transforming Talent, Building Economies in Complex Contexts.

Through keynotes, panel discussions, masterclasses, and the Communities of Practice, VLC 2025 will spotlight and equip Africa’s boldest leaders across business, policy, academia, technology, spirituality, and culture. Leaders who understand that the measure of greatness is in people. Leaders who know that the future of Africa and indeed the world rests on building institutions, economies, and cultures where people thrive.

VLC 2025 would take place on October 24–25, in Lagos and across global hubs including Houston, London, Nairobi, South Africa, Ghana, and Australia, with full virtual access worldwide. The Conference is open to emerging and established leaders, visionaries, founders, entrepreneurs, managers, Coaches, executives, and all who want to position themselves for impact and legacy.

At the heart of VLC 2025 is the Human Heroes Awards, a celebration of leaders who embody people-centred leadership in action. This prestigious recognition would highlight individuals who are creating tangible impact by empowering others, transforming communities, and building legacies that outlive them. By honoring these visionaries, the Human Heroes Awards not only shine a light on remarkable examples of service and leadership but also inspire a new generation of Africans to lead with purpose, empathy, and courage.

VLC 2025 is a call to rise, lead, and build with people at the centre. We encourage you to be a part of this powerful movement and join visionary leaders across Africa and the world at VLC 2025. Kindly visit our website to get more details about the conference and register.
